Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
