The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
