Presence
Steven Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries in this clever supernatural story filmed completely through the eyes of a ghost. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their fresh home, the filming device – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. The daughter appears conscious of the supernatural presence, and it seems defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He portrays an egotistical film star called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to appear at a celebration at a Mediterranean location for the wealthy superfan Javi. The Black Phone
The director's locked-room horror remains effective without requiring a sequel. Located in 1978 Denver, multiple kidnappings has made the children frightened. When Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and locked up in a dungeon, he dreads a terrible outcome. But the disconnected phone in the room continues to ring, with spooky callers providing assistance, while the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, late evening, the Film4 channel
This Dramatic Portrait
In the conflict between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story of the disgraced religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who proclaims early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about profiting from the nation's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, yet Chastain succeeds to depict Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, 1.15am, Film4
