European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.

Additional Updates in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
