The online network X has sparked major anger after users utilized its AI chatbot Grok to change photos of females by taking off their attire.
Numerous examples have been seen where the technology has been used to remove clothing from women to make them appear in swimwear non-consensually, as well as to insert them in inappropriate situations.
Developer Response and Legal Stance
XAI, the company responsible for Grok, offered no comment to questions, except for an standard message stating "legacy media lies".
A government representative stated that new laws is being proposed to outlaw image stripping technology. Under a upcoming law, anyone who distributed such tools would "receive a jail term and heavy penalties".
"X or Grok is capable of halting these forms of abuse if they desired to," said a law professor, adding they "seem to have a lack of consequences."
Oversight Body Position and Platform Functionality
The regulator Ofcom said technology companies must "evaluate the potential" of people seeing unlawful material on their networks, but stopped short of confirming whether it was presently looking into X or Grok in regarding artificial intelligence pictures.
Grok is a free artificial intelligence—with some premium functions—which answers X users' prompts when they reference it in a tweet.
It is often used to offer commentary or more context to other users' comments, but people on X are also can edit an posted picture through its artificial intelligence picture modification tool.
History of Criticism and Rules
The system has been criticised for enabling users to generate photos and videos with nudity and sexualised content, and it was earlier alleged to have been involved in making sexually explicit material of public figures.
"X has been allowing the generation and sharing of these pictures for a long time without taking any action and we have yet to see any challenge by regulators," the expert added.
XAI's own acceptable use policy prohibits "showing likenesses of people in a graphic fashion".
In a comment, Ofcom said it was illegal to "generate or circulate non-consensual intimate images or illegal content" and clarified this included explicit AI images made with AI.
It said services such as X were obligated to take "appropriate steps" to "minimize the risk" of users encountering unlawful content on their services and to take down it promptly when they become aware of it.
